Chapter One
Description of the Vedas
Sri Dhanvantaraye Nama Sushruta Samhita
At one time, the sages Aupadhenava, Baitarana, Aurabhrava, Paushkalavata, Karavirya, Gopurarakshita and Sushruta Prabhruta, who were staying in Vanaprasthashrama, said to the great Lord Dhanvantari, who was the lord of Kashi, Divodasa, saying, “Venerable sir! Seeing people suffering from various kinds of physical, mental, foreign and natural diseases, being attached to their relatives, and crying out in awe, as if they were orphans, gives us great pain in our hearts. We desire to hear from you the teachings of Ayurveda for the peace of their diseases, for the maintenance of our lives and for the welfare of the people. All the good things of this world and the next depend on the knowledge of Ayurveda, therefore, we have come to you as disciples.”
Lord Dhanvantari asked them for their good news and said, “Children! You are all very suitable to study, I am no different. This Ayurveda is a special part of the Atharvaveda. Before the creation of living beings, Brahma divided it into a thousand chapters with lakhs of verses. Later, seeing that people were becoming short-lived and less intelligent, he again divided it into eight parts, namely—
Salyatantra, Salkyatantra, Kayachikitsa, Bhootaviddha, Kaumarabhrutya, Agaad Sesith, Rasayanatantra and Vajikriyaan Sesith.
Brief symptoms of these are as follows:
1. Shalya system-The method of removing painful objects such as straw, wood, pebbles, dust, iron, thorn, bone, hair, nail, pus, infected pimples and unfertilized fetuses inside the body is described here.
2. Shalakya system-Its purpose is to cure diseases of the eyes, mouth, nose and ears starting from the back of the head.
3. Kaaya therapy-Its purpose is to cure diseases of the whole body such as fever, gout, blood bile, tuberculosis, madness, epilepsy, leprosy and fever.
4. Ghost science-Its purpose is to drive away gods, demons, gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas, pathagrahas, pisachas and nagas through peace rituals and sacrifices.
5. Its purpose is to raise children who are virtuous, to remove the defects of milk from the mother, to remove diseases arising from contaminated milk and to remove the planets that are attached to the children.
6. Agaad System-It is used to identify and cure diseases arising from the poison of snakes, monkeys, rats, scorpions and insects, from the poison of bees, conchs and other insects, and from the poison of the connection.
7. Rasayana System-The age of a person cannot be estimated by Rasayana, that is, an older person appears younger, and also the lifespan, stamina and strength increase, and no disease can enter the body.
8. Vajiyyarana System-For those whose metal is very thin, contaminated, scarce and hot, this Vajiyyarana helps in increasing the power of intercourse by making their metal thick, pure, abundant and cool.
Thus Ayurveda is divided into eight parts, so who can tell us what to study? They said, ‘“Let us learn other things, starting with knowledge.”
He said, ‘‘Very well.’’ They said, ‘‘Only Sushruta, who is of our own particular opinion, will ask you questions. If you explain to him, we will understand.’’ He said, ‘‘Very well
O Sushruta! Ayurveda is the science of curing the sick and maintaining the health of the healthy. This scripture is called Ayurveda because it tells us what longevity is and how to achieve it. The Shalya system is its first and foremost part. I am telling this without any contradiction of direct, inference, example or apocryphal, remember this.
This Shalya Tantra is the first of all. In ancient times (when no disease had arisen), wounds and sores arising from injuries were cured by it, and even the severed head of the sacrificial animal (according to some, the sacrificial animal and according to some, the powerful Prajapati) was reattached. It is said that the great deva tore off the head of the sacrificial animal in anger, so the gods went to the two Ashwini Kumaras and said, “You two should reattach the heads of the sacrificial animals. By doing this, you will become great among us.” They both said, “Okay.” After this, the gods consulted Indra and made the sacrifices for the sake of both of them. Then they both joined the heads of the sacrifice.
This system is the best among the eight Ayurveda Tantras. In it, healing is achieved very quickly by using Yantra, Shastra, Ksha and Fire.
It also describes other systems such as Salakya. It is eternal and holy. The main methods for happiness, fame, longevity and livelihood are written in it.
First of all, Prajapati learned it from Brahma, from Prajapati, the Ashwini Kumara duo and from them Indra learned it. I learned it from Indra. Now, for the benefit of people, I will teach it to those who want to learn it. I am Adidev Dhanvantari. I have now descended to earth to cure old age, disease and death from the gods and to teach other systems such as Salakya along with Salatantra. Ùˆ
In this scripture, the union of the five elements (earth, water, fire, air and sky) and the soul (jivatma) is called Lok or Purusha. He is the refuge of healing and its
Treatment is given. There are two types of people – stationary and movable. There are two types of people based on the qualities of the sun and moon, and five types based on the qualities of the five elements.
There are four types of living beings, namely – 1-Svedal (those born from the fifty-five vapors – Scorpio etc.). 2-Andal (those born from the egg). 3-Jarayuja (those born by breaking the uterus – human animals). 4-Those born by breaking the different worlds – Jiya etc.). Among them, man is the best, because he can employ everyone in his work, therefore he is the main point of treatment.
The suffering of a human being is called the disease. There are four types of disease, namely – Agantuka, physical, mental and natural.
1-Agantuka disease occurs due to the impact of iron arrows. 2- When the imbalance of bile, phlegm, phlegm, phlegm and blood occurs due to the wrong food habits, physical diseases occur. 3- Joy, sorrow, misery, lust, greed etc. and anger, fear, sadness, envy, hatred, hard work etc. are mental disorders that arise from the division of desire and hatred respectively. 4- Hunger, thirst, old age and death are natural diseases. The above four types of diseases are born in the mind and body.
If these four types of food habits, behavior, correction (actions such as vomiting and diarrhea) and cessation (actions such as not to vomit and diarrhea which keep the body in order) are done regularly, the disease gets cured.
The basis of the six types of food is to increase the strength, color and vigor of living beings. The juices protect the substances. The substances are called medicines. Those medicines are of two types, static and mobile.
Signs of the four elements - 1 - Plants, which bear fruit without flowers (Ashwattha, Bara and Umbar etc.). 2 - Trees, which bear flowers and fruits. (Mango, Pulanga etc.). 3 - Birut, which grows in clumps (Pasaruni etc.). 4 - Medicine, the plant of which dies after the fruit ripens (Barley, wheat etc.).
Signs of the four elements - 1 - Germs - humans, tigers and bears etc. 2 - Egg-birds, snakes and cows etc. 3 - Worms and scorpions etc. 4 - Various insects and frogs etc.
The skin, leaves, flowers, fruits, roots, tubers, stems and roots of the living things are collected. The skin, nails, hair, blood, flesh and bones are collected from the living things.
The external goods - gold, silver, gems, pearls, pearls, earth and skulls etc. The time-created goods - excess and deficiency of wind, sun, shade, moonlight, darkness, cold, heat, rain, day, night, wings, months, seasons and ayana (northern and southern). These are naturally the causes of accumulation, outbreak and relief of the vata, pitta and kapha faults and are necessary for their treatment. The above four things have been mentioned by the physicians as the causes for the increase and destruction of physical diseases. The external diseases are born by taking refuge in the body and mind. Their treatment is also of two types. Physical diseases are cured by treatment and mental diseases by obtaining the desired goods.
Here, four things are briefly described: Purusha, Vayadha, Medicine and Treatment Period. The word Purusha refers to his organ system, skin, blood, flesh, bones, veins and nerves and the five elements; the word Vayadha refers to all kinds of disorders arising from the imbalance of the elements of Vata, Pitta, Kapha and Rakta; the word Usadha refers to the substance, juice, quality, semen, disaster and effect; the word Ushadha refers to the verbs like cutting and Snehana and the time of treatment.
Thus, the entire theory of treatment is briefly described in this chapter. Later, one hundred and twenty chapters will be explained in five parts, namely Sutra, Nidan, Shari', Tsavva and Kalpa. The remaining matter will be covered in the answer.
Those who read this eternal Ayurveda scripture, first spoken by Brahma and later propagated by Kasipati, attain eternal virtue, are worshipped as kings in this world, and attain a place in the realm of dreams after death.
