The Devotee Who Asked for Nothing
A Tale of Unwavering Faith in Lord Ram
In the sacred land of Sthan, a unique devotee was born. He lived his life far from the world's hustle and bustle, untouched by business, household duties, or the influence of others' words. His heart remained forever immersed in the meditation of his beloved Lord Shri Ram.
Among four brothers, he stood apart. One day, his family said, "Brother, you are of no use—you neither work nor manage the house. It is better if you leave. He simply smiled and replied, "Hello, I am going."
As he departed, his family mocked him:
- Who will take care of your Lallan?"
- I have Nath—he will do it."
- Who will arrange food and water?
- I have Ram—He will provide
- Who will give shelter?
- Ram will give it
Then, his elder brother remarked, And when you die, who will perform your last rites? At this, tears filled the devotee’s eyes. Softly, he whispered, Just as Lord Shri Ram performed the last rites for Jatayu, He will do the same for me. With that, he walked away.
Fearless of the jungle, unbothered by hunger or thirst, he lived in complete surrender. Meanwhile, in the divine abode, Lord Shri Ram, seated in the upper chamber of Shodhnaman, felt overwhelming joy. Hanuman Ji noticed and asked, Lord, why are there tears in your eyes?"
The Lord replied, Hanuman, every devotee asks for something—but this one asked only that I perform his last rites. For 20 to 25 years, he lived in the jungle without complaint, without desire, trusting only in God.
When the time came, Lord Rama declared, "Hanuman, the moment has arrived." He asked for nothing in life except this—I will perform his last rites myself on August 10th and complete the 13-day rituals.
Hanuman Ji humbly requested, You performed Jatayu’s rites—grant me the privilege of serving this devotee with Your blessings. The Lord smiled and agreed, Very well, Hanuman. But I will appear to him at his final hour and assure him that you shall conduct his rites.
As the devotee’s soul prepared to depart, the forest trembled with divine presence. Lord Shri Ram appeared before him, accompanied by Hanuman Ji, and proclaimed, Your faith is proven true. Hanuman himself will perform your last rites, with my grace."
And so, Shri Hanuman Ji Maharaj carried out the devotee’s final rituals with utmost reverence, as if welcoming a saint home. From that day, Lord Ram reminds all devotees: Ask for nothing in life. If you are seen at the end, know your life has been truly successful.
