The Caged Bird's Secret: A Tale of Freedom and Wisdom
There was once a rich merchant in a country. He traveled to a faraway land to do business and made a great fortune. With his earnings, he bought precious items and returned home with them.
This rich man had a unique pet—a pig. But this pig lived in luxury! It stayed in a golden cage and was fed rice and milk in a silver bowl. Whatever it desired, the merchant bought for it without hesitation. Before going on another business trip, the merchant asked everyone in his household what they wanted as gifts. His daughter wanted a pearl necklace, his son a black horse, and his mother a golden idol. But he had forgotten to ask his beloved pig! When he went to the pig’s cage, he found it staring sadly at the sky. The merchant asked, “What should I bring for you? ” The pig replied calmly, “You don’t need to bring anything for me. Just go into the forest of the country you visit. Find the pigs there and tell them that a pig like them is caged here. Then, tell me what they say.” The merchant was puzzled but agreed. After successful business abroad, he bought the gifts and finally remembered the pig’s wish. He rode into the forest and found many pigs sitting in a tree, singing. When he told them the message, an old pig suddenly fell from the tree. Confused and alarmed, the merchant returned home. After giving gifts to his family, he told the caged pig what had happened. On hearing it, the pig collapsed in the cage. Thinking it had died in grief, the merchant opened the cage—and to his shock, the pig suddenly flew into the sky!
“You’re a bird? ” the merchant gasped.
From the branch of a tree, the bird replied, “Yes, I was dying to escape. The bird who fell from the tree showed me the way. By pretending to be dead, I was freed.” “You thought I was dead, so you opened the cage. Now I am free. Thank you! With one last flutter, the bird soared freely into the vast sky. True freedom can’t be caged, no matter how golden the walls. Freedom is more precious than comfort. Wisdom is not limited by appearance. At times, quiet actions can achieve what words never will.3 Sacred Gifts for Pregnant Women to Bless Their Baby with Wisdom and Grace
